  16. <p>     INDICTED. Marion S. Barry Jr., 54, mayor of Washington; on
  17. six counts of misdemeanor drug offenses (cocaine possession,
  18. conspiracy to possess cocaine), less than four weeks before he
  19. is to go on trial on eight counts (including three felony
  20. charges of lying) handed up after his arrest in January in an
  21. FBI sting operation; by a federal grand jury in Washington.
  22. Despite his legal problems and treatment for alcoholism and
  23. prescription-drug addiction, he has been acting as though he
  24. will run for a fourth term; a felony conviction would make him
  25. ineligible to hold the office.
